About Us
The Founders
James Coe and Nella Cargioli Coe
Both graduated from RISD's Architecture program in 1995 and achieved licensure in 2002. They incorporated Coe + Coe Architecture in 2017, bringing a depth of residential and commercial experience: schools, restaurants, historic and new homes, and multi-family developments.
Since returning to Vermont, the firm has focused largely on commercial agriculture and food processing. That ties the circle: agrarian practicality, commercial rigor, and creative solutions in the same set of drawings.
We work directly with owners from first sketch through permitting and construction, and we stay on the job until the last detail is right.

Rhode Island School of Design
James and Nella both earned their Bachelor of Architecture degrees from RISD in Providence, Rhode Island, a program built on studio-intensive making, drawing by hand, and understanding materials before form. That training still shapes how we work: detail-first, model-driven, and skeptical of anything that can't be built well.
Licensure followed in 2002, after years in offices across the East and West Coasts, including a dozen years running a practice in Portland, Oregon.
The Farm
Ledgenear Farm
Ledgenear Farm is a hilltop homestead in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom with roots reaching back to the 1850s. Across generations the land has carried field crops, sheep, dairy cattle, and certified organic maple syrup.
James was born and raised on this farm. He and Nella returned with their children, Isabella and Jude, to restore the old sugar house, tend the maple woods, and keep the place working: alpacas, grass-fed cattle, a lavender greenhouse, and farm stays in the 1800s farmhouse and lakeside cottage.
The farm is why the practice reads the way it does: agrarian practicality first, and buildings that have to earn their keep.
